A deadly shooting inside the Wegmans Distribution Center at 1500 Brooks Avenue has left a young man dead and a community in mourning. JMere Smith, 20, was shot and killed Saturday afternoon in a targeted attack that has shocked employees, loved ones, and local authorities.
According to Gates Police Chief Robert Long, officers responded to the scene at approximately 4:15 p.m. following reports of gunfire in the produce section of the facility. Smith, who had suffered multiple point-blank gunshot wounds to the chest, was pronounced dead on the scene despite immediate efforts by emergency responders.
The shooter, described as a Black male wearing a gray hoodie, black clothing, and a face mask, fled the facility before law enforcement arrived. Witnesses reported seeing the suspect escape in a black sedan, possibly a BMW. Law enforcement agencies, including the Gates Police Department, Greece PD, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, and New York State Police, quickly descended upon the area to secure the scene and launch a multi-agency investigation.
Authorities later confirmed that officers had set up surveillance on a residence in Gates believed to be linked to the suspect. A trained RPD nitrate K-9 unit was requested to assist in the ongoing search.
Police say there is no current threat to the public, and they do not believe the incident is related to a separate shooting that occurred Friday outside a nearby Amazon warehouse.
The motive for the shooting remains unknown, and the suspect has not yet been publicly identified. Investigators are urging anyone with information to contact 911 or Crime Stoppers immediately.
J’Mere Smith, a former standout athlete at Wilson Magnet High School, played as #21 on the boys’ varsity basketball team, taking on the roles of power forward (PF) and small forward (SF). His passion for the game, discipline, and strong presence on and off the court left a lasting impression on teammates, coaches, and friends.
News of his death has left the Rochester community reeling. “We mourn the tragic and senseless loss of J’Mere Smith,” one community member posted on social media. “He was more than just a young man with promise—he was part of our family.”
As investigators work tirelessly to bring answers and justice, loved ones are left to grieve a life taken far too soon.
